Should you mix and match in your home? Absolutely!
I think people can tie themselves up in knots about this. Do I have to stick to one wood colour in a room? Should I use only one metal in my bathroom? Should I limit the amount of pattern?
The answer for all of these is 'No!'
Imagine these two scenarios. You're in a living room and all the wooden furniture is light brown. You're in a bathroom and all the sanitaryware/accessories are nickel. What do you think when you look at both rooms?
For me, I would imagine the room feels flat, right?
There's something uniform about it all because you've played the safe game, which I completely understand as it can be scary and overwhelming to have to think about what goes together or not.
But you don't have to play it safe with interiors - when you mix and match, the room instantly feels less ‘catalogue-y’ and more curated, personal and interesting.
A few loose rules to get you started:
Light, dark, orange wood? Go for it - the contrast adds depth.
Mixing metals? Absolutely, but I’d advise to stick to three max, with one as the dominant finish.
Patterns? A stripe, a small print, a large print, and a plain - that mix rarely goes wrong.
Old and new? Mix. It. Up. Always throw in something contemporary with something vintage/antique - c’est très chic!
So next time you catch yourself asking 'but does it go?'- the answer is probably yes. Trust your instincts, buy the pieces you love, and don't be afraid to put it next to something unexpected. That's where the magic happens.
And if in doubt, contact me and we can work it out together!
