Is interior design worth it?

Interior design is a luxury service. No doubt. It’s a conscious choice to put your hard earned money towards your home. But, I think we have to re-frame the question and actually make it about the outcome. Maybe something like this - “Do you want to live in a home that feels like you, works for you, gives you a sense of pride when you walk through the door, and fills you with joy?”

I’m pretty sure most people will say yes.

I’ve been in social media conversations about why homeowners are reluctant to work with an interior designer, or have never considered it. Cost came out on top, as expected. We all work hard and we want to be confident that where we spend our money will give us the return we want. AI was also mentioned quite a bit. Now, if you read my journals, I posted about this very topic - “Can I just design my own home using A!?” - very recently so my thoughts can be found there. Exec summary - with respect, no, I don’t think you can.

So, I’ve decided to create a quick summary of some very good reasons why you should work with an interior designer if you want the outcome of a home that feels like you, works for you, gives you a sense of pride when you walk through the door, and fills you with joy…

Expert knowledge and experience

Like any other profession, interior designers are experts in their field. We understand flow and function, colour theory, electrical and lighting planning, project co-ordination and delivery, possess technical and software skills, manage timelines and budgets, and we are definitely experts in communication and support. We care about getting it right. Every detail. Every time.

Get the fundamentals right

Let’s be honest, designing your home - whether a refresh or full on renovation - can be overwhelming. There are so many decisions to be made before the beginning, at the beginning, in the middle, at the end, and everywhere in between. Designers are practised in doing things in the right order so your project runs smoothly.

A personalised design

Interior designers do not design for themselves! Yes, you were probably initially attracted to a designer based on their portfolio, but that does not mean it’s a cookie cutter approach. We take the time to really listen to you - how you want to live and feel in your home - your likes, dislikes, memories etc and pull that together to create a design that is unmistakeably you. Repeat after me. You. Are. The. Client.

Save time and effort

Design projects, no matter the size, consume far more time than you'd expect. From supplier research to furniture and material sourcing, the hours add up quickly. A designer takes this off your plate. They manage the legwork and logistics while guaranteeing everything works together. It fits, it complements your existing furniture, and it delivers your vision.

Avoid costly mistakes

Decorating mistakes are costly. Wrong colours, poorly sized furniture, and unsuitable materials don't just inconvenience you once, they often need costly corrections again and again. An interior designer prevents this. They manage your budget, source durable, quality items that fit your space perfectly, and select aesthetically pleasing materials built to last.

P.S. Cost and quality don't always align. The best designers know how to spot true value.

The human eye

AI design tools are being increasingly used to design homes, but can it do the same job as an interior designer? Respectfully, no. A designer brings judgement. Taste. A trained eye that’s been honed over years of looking, learning, and making decisions. The ability to look at something and know, instinctively, confidently, whether it works, whether it’s right, whether it’s you.

Push the boundaries of comfort

Working with a designer is a relationship built on mutual trust. We want to make sure you are happy with the design. But, it is also our job to ‘gently’ push you out of your comfort zone and challenge your thinking. This is where the magic lies - on the other side of ‘safe’. We do this to give you the little bit extra you never considered. One where you’ll look back and say “yep, I’m glad we did that.”

Collaboration. Respect. Trust. Enjoyment. Results. Transformation.

If you like any of these words, you’ll enjoy working with an interior designer.

Designing a space is an investment in your home. It’s about creating an environment that enhances your lifestyle, boosts wellbeing, showcases your style, and most importantly, you love living in.

Who wouldn’t want that?
